Birds & Wildlife in My Garden
Wasps
A lot of people dislike wasps in the garden, but if they are left alone, they can be beneficial to the garden. If you suffer from caterpillars munching through your veg and flower borders, attract wasps with plants like the Poached Egg plant. A small delicate plant, that attracts wasps. There is no easy cure to get rid of caterpillars, unless you go out and night and pick them off the plants, as there is no spray to kill them off naturally. However, a wasp loves to eat baby caterpillars. You can buy wasps online just for this purpose.

Grey Squirrel
Our grey squirrel seems to have an bit of an attitude, as he will see the neighbours cat off quite easily. He will sit in the bird house for hours, and quite easily empty the contents of a nut feeder on one session.
If you plant bulbs in your garden, they also like to east these, so one trick is, when you plant them, pop some chicken wire under the soil, about an inch deep. This will stop your bulbs disappearing. |
Where possible, always try to put something out for your local wildlife. Nuts and suet balls are a favourite.
Most birds also like sunflower seeds. However, be aware that once eaten, they must come back out, so you may end up with sunflowers growing in your garden, that you never planted.
Avoid putting any cooked food out, or any type of meat. Most birds won’t eat it, and can be harmful to them.
Always put the food up on a bird table. Putting food on the ground will only attract mice and rats.
